This Web site has been created and developed by a group of volunteers who are part of the "Friends of GHNP." We come from all walks of life and believe that GHNP should have international support for its efforts to protect a part of the unique environment of the Western Himalaya.

GHNP is a new park having just finalized all the legal aspects in May, 1999. The Park needs to get its message out to the world. As a volunteer group donating our time, we are always eager to have new "friends" to help us in this work. Towards that end we are looking for assistance in the following areas.

Take a Trek
Take a SAHARA organized trek in GHNP. Friends of GHNP can be organized into a special trek with a GHNP officials for a week or more in the Park. This is a unique experience in true wilderness with the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Park and if you're lucky you might see some of the endangered animals like a Western Tragopan, Himalayan Brown Bear, and Himalayan Tahr. Treks are arranged through SAHARA, a non-governmental organization creating employment in the poor villages of the Ecozone. This is a great way to support both GHNP and self-determination in rural India.

Group treks can also be arranged for those interested in assisting with environmental research in the Park and the Long Term Environmental Research (LTER) projects that are currently underway. Contact the Park Director or "Friends of GHNP" via email.

We're trying to set up a non-profit organization (or linking to an existing environmental non-profit group). We would like to have an annual membership fee which helps support the Park and SAHARA. THIS IS TENTATIVE UNTIL WE HAVE ORGANIZATION:
Your annual contribution of $35.00US or more (we recommend at least $50.00US) will help support GHNP research and maintenance. Contributions and checks can be made out to Friends of GHNP and mailed to:

Volunteer
Donate your professional skills and time. We are looking for help in these areas:

Legal
we need to incorporate as a non-profit 501C3, preferably in California. Are you a lawyer who can help us? We also need accounting services for tax returns, etc.

Publicity
we need to generate awareness and publicity about GHNP in the US and European press. Interviews can be arranged with the Director of the Park, as well as Westerner's who have trekked there and are familiar with the issues.

Treking Equipment
We're looking for donations for the SAHARA "Porter Society". They need new or used:
Four-man tents
Backpacks
Camp stoves using kerosene
Sleeping bags
Hiking boots
High quality water filters or purification systems

Media Support
Educational Videos for Park:
We have 16 hours of unedited Hi8mm video tape cover three different treks in GHNP with great Nature footage, animals, vistas, plants, etc. It includes interviews with Park staff, local villagers, SAHARA personnel, porters, etc. There are also outtakes of life in the Ecozone and of the incredible Dushera Festival and aspects of Kullu religious life. Our goal is to create a few short (5-10 minutes) pieces on different GHNP aspects. There may also be the possibility of producing a longer PBS or Discovery Channel-type documentary based on this footage as a pilot. Post production help needed.

GHNP Documentary on

Lectures:
We have a small group of individuals who have spent time in GHNP and are very well informed on the Park and related issues. A 30 minute slide show presentation with great imagery will surely interest a wide audience.
